There are broadly two types of CVs; professional and academic. These can follow a chronological order or present practical skills and expertise in a functional format.
Professional CV
Professional CVs target jobs in the industry and are tailored to showcase your experience and expertise in skills specific to the position you are applying for.
The format typically opens with a short personal statement, with an overview of your skills and a timeline of employment.
Academic CV
An academic CV is specific to jobs in academia, such as tutor, lecturers and post-doctoral researchers. This format emphasis your research areas, expertise and publications.
This is typically formatted with a personal statement tailored to the job position, with a list of skills matching the job specification followed by a timeline of qualifications and publications.
Learning Activity
• Learners to:
– Work in groups to discuss the differences between professional and academic CVs. Also consider if there are other types of CVs and the sort of jobs these target (60 minutes).
– Write down a summary of what each type of CV contains, how they are structured and how this is relevant to a specific profession (60 minutes).
– Discuss in your groups how you would structure a CV for at least three different types of jobs in Computing
Science/Cyber Security (60 minutes).
