What are professional skills?
Each person is expected to possess a certain set of skills related to their chosen profession, in order to adequately perform the tasks expected according to their job specification.
These skills are known as professional skills, specifically tailored to the chosen profession.

Learning Activity 1
• Learners to:
– Work in groups to discuss what professional skills are, giving examples of general professional skills (30 minutes).
– Write down a list of professional skills (30 minutes).
– Discuss and write down in your groups, which of these skills are most crucial in a computing or cyber security job (40 minutes).

Skills specific to cyber security
While a students’ academic skills are developed regardless of their chosen vocation, your field of study will identify and refine skills related to a particular branch of a profession.
Think about what skills your have developed so far, in order to prepare you for a career in cyber security.

Recall the types and categories of skills discussed in previous sessions; transferable and academic skills.
In a broad sense, they all fall under the category of “life skills” using different names.
Now think about what sort of activities a professional working in a cyber security job entails.

• Learners to:
– Look up one to three cyber security jobs which you are interested in applying for, identifying the skill and specifications required (40 mins).
– Write down in a document a list of your professional skills. Cross-reference your set of skills to the requirements from the cyber security jobs identified previously. Think about any gaps in your skillset and how these can be addressed (40 mins).
